Dear Friends

This is not anonymous letter as the author’s real name and address are clearly stated. Nor is this a type of chain letter promising reward and damnation, if you choose to ignore it. This letter is different, it is an invitation for you to partake in a campaign to promote the appreciation of a balanced justice in our society.

We have often the word justice. A vey easy word to utter but so different to realize. From time immemorial man has always proclaimed: “Justice for all, regardless colour or creed”. But ironically we still witness in justice prevailing among us even to this day: suppresion of human rights and neglect of responsibilities; unequal opportunities in many fields; law immunity for the privileged few an injustice for the masses; and so on and on. Why do such things never cease to happen? And what, then, is the remedy?

The Concept of Justice

Let us assume that the author has come to recognize that one cause of all this injustice is: the injustice of our concept of justice itself! If we may compare justice in a coin, throughout civilization men have only culvitated one side of this coin while the the other side remains rudimentarily developed beyong our day to day interest. The familiar face of justice is: punishing those who commit evil deeds in one instant or another. “An eye for an eye, a tooth”, goes the popular saying. And so does this culture of punishment continue through the ages. Initially intended as a mean of vengeance, then to protect the community, it gradually develops into a means of reforming wrongdoers.

It is for these aims that we have the theory of criminal law taught in universities while, simultaneously, developing better and still better “technology” of execution culminating in the guillotine in one time, and followed by other more “humane” but deadlier termination methods like the death serum for injection! In the process we have established law supporting “Institutions”: the court, prison, and lawa counselling bureaus. And we all learn to respect law enforcement professions: police, judge, jury, lawyer, prosecutor, etc.

The Other Side of The Coin

What happened to the other side of the coin? Have men treated it as the equal of punishment, namely: rewarding those who benefited the wellbeing of society in one way or another? Dear friend, i’m afraid the answer of this question is negative! Empirical evidence to suggest this thesis is abundant: there is no scientific theory developed not to mention academic cources on how to reward people justly. What kind of supporting system do we need to establish the justice in the form of the reward system beyond the conventional ritualistic awards? Do we already have the technology and profession, and institution responsible for the execution of social heroes?

Let us look at the age symbol of justice is taken from greek Mythology: the goddess of justice. There we see the pair of balancing scales to measure the degree of one’s misdeeds, and the sword as the symbol of punishment technology. And the closed eyes reflecting indiscrimination. A cute symbol, but simultaneously an unjust one-promoting justice one side only: punishment! Why is it? That man has observed only one side of justice since the beginning of the human civilization that we tend to preserve up to the modern times? Thereby justifying one to ask the consequent inevitable question: why not change the statue’s name to the goddessof punishment, ever since?

The Tradition of Rewards

We are not inclined to forget those who have benefited mankind in one way or another. Remember the nobel price issues for outstanding performens in the fields of: medicine, literature, economy, chemistry, physics, and world peace. And the pulitzer price in the fields of: journalism, letters, and music, and many other in the national as well as international scope. But can the reward system we developed so far touch upon the whole spectrum and qualities of achievement in multivarious field of human endeavor? Can it be regarded equivalent in strength compared to the other side of justice, the punisment system?

Indeed, we do not tend to forget heroes, we only ignore them. As we use to execuse to ourselves, isn’t it natural thing to do, doing good to our fellow man? Isn’t it the token of highcivilization? So, why this fuss about rewards? Yes, my friend, how right you are! Doing good to our fellow man is indeed expected of us all by our creator. Let he alone is to judge who is to be rewarded and what is to be reward, In the after life. But wait! Doesn’t this statement reflect our unjust attitude one again? Even God is supposed to provide heaven besides hell in the after life, so why do we-human being-build only hell on earth? What an injustice! We do not know when we start to build a model pf prison like Alcatraz island or the Gulao Archipelago as a forced labour camp in Siberia, and wether we will continue to establish prisons everyway all the time. But is there any Garden of Eden for those who have benefited their society? If we dare to apply the death penalty to the lowest criminal, why aren’t we sincere enough to provide our best services for those who have enchanged our wellbeing? We may probably prolog their invaluable life and promote their creative achievement with such attitude.

An Invitation

This letter is lauched with the assumption that man is nothing scared or extraordinary, he is just a being with a common vulneberality and credibility. His behavior is still rukled by the pleasure principle as strongly as ever. We do not know however how many among us who performed very well for the benefit of society decided to stop somehow, because of their frustation. And on the other hand, neither do we know haow many and what kind of criminals we have produced through our social injustice so far?

Come on, my dear friend! Let us first of all review the concept of justice that we have, before we talk about establishing social justice. Let us promote together a system of balanced justice in our society so that we are not forced to enter into a barbaris trap: giving reward to those who do evil, and punishing the good doers among us!

We do not have to wait for others to start this effort, because the first step to that direction is with you, me, the individual. Let us promote first mutual understanding among us, try try to have the mission well received and understodd by friends of ours. man isn't born human, we all have o fight our long way to humanity and so the soial justice will not established automatically; it has to be created by all of us, in a just way.

therefore it would mean a lot to our campaign of promoting this new movement of after reading this article you ould kindly reproduce and pass it a long to our friends or relations so that they to may read the message. 2 or 3 copies are enough, but more would be better.

it is often said that ideas can change the world I firmly believe it. Do you?
